Overview

The Community Health Nursing Department is committed to providing practical, hands-on experience for students in diverse community settings, including the Rural Training Centre at Marapadi, the Urban Training Centre at Peruvazhikadavu, and the adopted areas within Arumanai, Thiruvattar, and Ponmanai Panchayat. These placements offer students invaluable opportunities to engage with real-world health issues, participate in national health programs, and apply contemporary health technologies and care modalities to deliver quality nursing care within communities.

OBJECTIVES & FOCUS

In these training settings, students engage in a variety of community health activities, including:

  • Household Surveys and Home Visits: Students conduct surveys and visit homes to assess and monitor health needs.
  • Health Care Programs and School Health Programs: The department organizes preventive and promotive health programs in schools and community centers.
  • Special Clinics and Health Camps: Specialized clinics and health camps are regularly set up in collaboration with local health authorities.
  • Health Education: Engaging local community leaders, students and faculty deliver health education sessions aimed at fostering behavioral changes to promote, maintain, and restore health within the community.

For Undergraduates

  1. Foundation in Community Health Nursing: To provide students with foundational knowledge and understanding of Community Health Nursing.
  2. Problem Identification: To train students in identifying common health issues affecting community members.
  3. Analytical and Solution Development Skills: To equip students with the ability to analyze health problems and develop interventions that protect and promote community health.
  4. Family-Centered Care: To instill a family-centered approach in nursing care, focusing on holistic support for individuals and families.

For Postgraduates

  1. Team Participation: To prepare students to actively and effectively participate as members of the Community Health Team.
  2. Emergency and Disaster Management: To train students to assist in the management of community health emergencies, epidemics, and natural disasters.
  3. Application of Advanced Techniques: To equip students with the skills to apply recent technologies and care modalities in community health nursing.
  4. Community Projects: To enable students to design and conduct community health projects, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical care.
  5. Teaching and Supervision: To encourage postgraduate students to take on roles in teaching and supervising nurses and allied health workers in community settings.

Research Activities

The department actively promotes research as a critical component of community health nursing:

  • Research Methodology: Students are introduced to the principles of research methodology, allowing them to approach health challenges analytically.
  • Community Research Projects: Students are encouraged to conduct research within the community, under faculty guidance, to complete projects that address pressing health issues and contribute to evidence-based practice.

Conferences and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)

The Community Health Nursing Department, in collaboration with the Academic Forum, conducts regular Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) programs for faculty, postgraduate, and undergraduate students. These programs are designed to ensure that all members of the department are up-to-date with the latest developments in community health nursing and to foster a culture of lifelong learning. Topics include advances in nursing practice, public health initiatives, health policy updates, and best practices in community care. Through conferences and CNE, the department strengthens its commitment to professional growth and the pursuit of excellence in community health nursing.
