Objectives

  • To prepare students with skills in antenatal and postnatal care, labor assistance, and gynecological nursing.
  • To support the development of skills in family planning and women’s health education.

Obstetric & Gynecological Nursing

Obstetric & Gynecological Nursing is dedicated to the comprehensive care of women during their childbearing years. This field encompasses a broad scope, including reproductive health, care during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, as well as family welfare and managing gynecological conditions. The Obstetric & Gynecological Nursing course equips students with the knowledge, skills, and attitude required to function as competent nurse midwives. Students gain hands-on clinical experience in antenatal and postnatal wards, outpatient departments, labor rooms, gynecology operating theaters, and gynecology wards under the supervision of specialized faculty.

The postgraduate program in Obstetric & Gynecological Nursing provides students with advanced expertise and a deeper understanding of the field. This training prepares graduates to take on roles as educators, managers, and researchers, contributing to advancements in obstetric and gynecological care.

Advanced Training for Postgraduates

Postgraduate students are encouraged to assist in specialized procedures, including:

  • Pap smears and episiotomy suturing.
  • Intrauterine fetal well-being assessments.
  • Assistance with operative deliveries (e.g., forceps, ventouse, breech).
  • Procedures like exchange blood transfusions, culdoscopy, endometrial biopsy, ultrasonography, amniocentesis, chemotherapy, tubal patency testing, medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), and dilatation and curettage.

Clinical Training and Requirements

Students undertake a range of clinical assignments to enhance their practical skills, including:

  • Care planning and care studies.
  • Case presentations.
  • Health education sessions.
  • Antenatal and postnatal assessments.

  • Conducting normal deliveries and performing episiotomy and suturing.
  • Setting up delivery areas.
  • Inserting intrauterine devices (e.g., Copper T).

Procedures and Skills Training

Students are trained in various clinical procedures to ensure proficiency in:

  • Antenatal and postnatal assessments for both normal and high-risk pregnancies.
  • Episiotomy care and delivery room setup.
  • Immediate newborn care, including NICU procedures.
  • Postnatal and antenatal breastfeeding guidance.
  • Intranatal care and resuscitation measures.

Clinical Requirements

Students assist in deliveries, postnatal care, and high-risk pregnancies, gaining hands-on experience in women’s health.

Field Visits and Community Exposure

In line with curriculum requirements, students also participate in field visits, including trips to family welfare bureaus, to gain exposure to community health practices and family planning services. This practical experience is essential in preparing them for diverse roles in obstetric and gynecological nursing.
