Our Motto
विद्या अमृतम् अश्नुते
Isha Upanishad — Verse 11 · "Through knowledge, one attains immortality"
This timeless Sanskrit verse reflects our belief that true education is not just about information, but transformation. Knowledge, rooted in values and compassion, becomes a force that outlives time, heals beyond the present, and uplifts generations. Thousands of nurses, doctors, dentists, and students have passed through our doors — trained to listen as much as they learn.
Since 1986
A legacy of compassion, healing and education — four decades in the making.

Every great institution begins with a dream. Ours began with a promise.
Nestled amidst the verdant hills of Kulasekharam in Kanyakumari district lived Ayurveda Aacharyan Shri Velayuthan Pillai, a physician whose reputation extended far beyond his village. Patients travelled long distances seeking not only his healing touch but also the compassion that defined his life. No one who came to his doorstep was ever turned away. Treatment, food, and shelter were offered with equal generosity, irrespective of one's ability to pay. For him, medicine was never a profession—it was a sacred calling and a lifelong commitment to humanity.
Among those who admired him most was his son, Late Shri K. V. Krishnan Nair. As a young boy, he watched his father dedicate every waking moment to serving others. He also witnessed the quiet sacrifices made by his mother, who tirelessly cooked for patients, cared for strangers as though they were family, and stood beside her husband in his noble mission. Those early experiences taught him that true service is never the work of one individual—it is the collective sacrifice of an entire family.
Although Shri Krishnan Nair dreamt of becoming a doctor himself, circumstances did not permit it. When his father passed away, he carried within him one unfulfilled dream—to continue the legacy of compassionate service.
Life, however, gave him another opportunity.
When his son was born, Shri Krishnan Nair held the child in his arms with tears in his eyes. Believing that his father's legacy had returned, he named him C. K. Velayuthan Nair and nurtured him with one unwavering purpose:
"Become a doctor—not for fame or wealth, but to serve humanity."
To fulfil that dream, he made an extraordinary sacrifice. At a time when every acre of land represented a family's future, he sold nearly three acres of ancestral property so that his son could pursue medicine at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. It was not merely land that he gave away—it was his security, his comfort, and his future, all in the hope that his son would build a better future for countless others.
Young Velayuthan Nair honoured every sacrifice. An exceptional student, he completed his MBBS and MS in General Surgery from Manipal and later joined the institution as a faculty member in the Department of Surgery. Admired by his teachers, respected by colleagues, and deeply trusted by his patients, he was destined for a distinguished academic career.
During this journey, he met Dr. Rema V. Nair, an accomplished medical graduate from Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, who later specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Manipal. United by their passion for medicine and their commitment to compassionate care, they had every opportunity to build successful careers in one of India's premier medical institutions.
Yet success alone did not define their purpose.
A deeply personal moment changed the course of Dr. Velayuthan Nair's life. The passing of his maternal grandfather, coupled with his inability to be by his side because of professional commitments, reminded him that true fulfilment lay not in titles or positions, but in serving the people and the land that had shaped him.
In 1986, Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair and Dr. Rema V. Nair made a life-changing decision. They left behind promising academic careers and returned to the rural town of Kulasekharam with a simple yet powerful mission—to ensure that quality healthcare would never be a privilege reserved for cities.
With limited resources but limitless determination, they established Velayuthan Pillai Memorial Hospital, named in honour of Ayurveda Aacharyan Shri Velayuthan Pillai, whose life of selfless service had inspired generations.
What began as a modest rural hospital gradually became a beacon of hope for thousands.
Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair earned the trust of the community not merely through surgical excellence but through unwavering ethics. Throughout his career, he has practised medicine with the conviction that patients are never numbers. There have been no revenue targets, no unnecessary procedures, and no compromises in ethics—only decisions guided by what is best for the patient. For nearly four decades, he has performed countless life-saving surgeries, often extending free or highly subsidised treatment to those who could not afford care.
Standing beside him throughout this remarkable journey has been Dr. Rema V. Nair—an exceptional obstetrician and gynaecologist, an inspiring teacher, a visionary administrator, and a compassionate humanitarian. Her dedication transformed maternal healthcare across the region, earning her the Government Best Performance Award for three consecutive years (1992, 1993, and 1994) for achieving the highest number of safe deliveries and puerperal sterilisation procedures. Beyond her clinical excellence, she has tirelessly championed women's health, preventive care, and community outreach, leading initiatives that have benefited thousands of women through cervical cancer screening, free mammography services, and public health awareness programmes.
Recognising that true societal transformation requires both healthcare and education, the couple established the Padanilam Welfare Trust in 1992, a not-for-profit public charitable trust dedicated to healthcare, education, research, and rural development.
Their vision soon extended far beyond a single hospital. Together, they believed that every patient in rural India deserves the same standard of healthcare available in the finest metropolitan hospitals. This philosophy has guided every milestone in the growth of Sree Mookambika Institutions.
Driven by this unwavering commitment, they have consistently introduced advanced medical technologies and superspecialty services, including Linear Accelerator (LINAC)-based Radiotherapy, PET-CT, Gamma Camera, Brachytherapy, FAPI PET-CT, Lutetium-PSMA Therapy, 350-slice Cardiac CT, IVUS, Rotablator, advanced 3D Laparoscopic Surgery, Awake Brain Surgery, and numerous other state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, ensuring that patients no longer need to travel hundreds of kilometres in search of world-class treatment.
Their guiding philosophy has always remained simple:
"If a treatment is available in a metropolitan city, our rural patients deserve access to it here as well."
Their commitment to healthcare extends far beyond hospital walls. Under their leadership, initiatives such as Vanashakthi, dedicated to tribal healthcare, Pink October, one of the region's largest breast cancer awareness campaigns, free Pap smear screening, free mammography, community health camps, free meals for patients and bystanders, free transportation services, and the Sree Mookambika Health Card have transformed the lives of countless families by making quality healthcare both accessible and affordable.
Over the past four decades, what began as a humble rural hospital has blossomed into Sree Mookambika Institutions—a comprehensive ecosystem comprising a Medical College, Dental College, Nursing College, Allied Health Sciences College, Cancer Centre, Research & Innovation Centre (SMCRI), Ayurveda Clinic, and Thrayambika Vidya Mandir CBSE School. Together, these institutions continue to touch millions of lives through excellence in healthcare, education, research, and community service.
Today, the story of Sree Mookambika Institutions is not merely the story of buildings, technology, or milestones.
It is the story of a promise kept.
Dr. C. K. Velayuthan Nair and Dr. Rema V. Nair have dedicated their lives not simply to building institutions, but to building a healthier, more compassionate, and more equitable society—where every patient is treated with dignity, every student is inspired with purpose, and every achievement is measured not by numbers, but by the lives transformed.
"From one healer's humble home to a world-class institution serving millions, the legacy of Ayurveda Aacharyan Shri Velayuthan Pillai lives on—through every patient healed, every student educated, and every life transformed."
