Overview
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) traces its origins to the Velayudhan Pillai Memorial Hospital, where the department was first established by Dr. Rema V. Nair, Director of SMIMS. With the conversion of the institution into a medical college in 2006, the department expanded at SMIMS to provide comprehensive clinical services, academic training, and research in women’s health. The department provides comprehensive care across all stages of a woman’s life, including antenatal care, high-risk pregnancy management, infertility services, menopause care, urogynecology, and gynaecological cancer management, supported by expertise in minimally invasive and advanced surgical techniques. With a strong focus on safe motherhood and maternal wellbeing, the department actively participates in government maternal health initiatives and is the only private hospital in Kanyakumari District approved under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Financial Assistance Program, enabling eligible mothers to receive government financial support along with free delivery services. Specialty clinics in urogynecology, high-risk obstetrics, gynaecologic oncology, and obstetric ultrasound ensure focused, protocol-based care. The department also leads innovative initiatives such as URV-SHE (Urinary Recto Vaginal Health and She), a program dedicated to addressing women’s pelvic floor disorders and restoring dignity, confidence, and quality of life. The department maintains a strong commitment to community outreach, conducting programs on anaemia prevention, adolescent health, maternal health awareness, pulse polio, and the “Save the Girl Child” initiative, thereby improving women’s health outcomes in the region. With an emerging research focus in molecular and genomic sciences, ongoing work explores areas such as infertility, preeclampsia, gynecological cancers, and pelvic floor disorders. Dedicated to becoming a Centre of Excellence in Women’s Health, the department continues to train future specialists while delivering compassionate, evidence-based, and innovative care for women and mothers.
