Overview

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) provides comprehensive care for disorders of the ear, nose, throat, head and neck region. The department focuses on accurate diagnosis, advanced surgical management, and patient-centered care for a wide range of ENT conditions. With experienced faculty members and trained residents, the department offers both medical and surgical treatment for ENT diseases while maintaining a strong commitment to teaching, research, and community health services. The department caters to patients from Kanyakumari district and surrounding regions, providing specialized care through advanced diagnostic facilities, modern surgical techniques, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Clinical Services

The department provides evaluation and treatment for a wide range of ENT conditions including:

  • Ear diseases and hearing disorders

  •  Head and neck tumors
  •  Salivary gland diseases
  •  Pediatric ENT disorders
  •  Vertigo and balance disorders
  • Sleep-related breathing disorders

The department also provides speech therapy services, audiology services, hearing aid trials, neonatal hearing screening programs, and voice analysis services.

Diagnostic endoscopic procedures for nasal cavity, larynx, and esophagus are routinely performed for accurate evaluation and management.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Outpatient Department

The ENT Outpatient Department includes consultation rooms and a minor procedure room equipped with essential instruments such as:

  • Operating microscope
  •  Endoscope with camera unit
  •  0° and 45° nasal endoscopes
  •  Flexible nasopharyngoscope

These facilities enable accurate diagnosis and minor procedures under aseptic conditions.

Inpatient Services:

The department has a 30-bed ward, consisting of 15 beds for male patients and 15 beds for female patients, providing comfortable inpatient care with continuous medical supervision.

Specialized Laboratories:

The department is supported by dedicated functional areas including:

  • Audiometry Room for hearing evaluation
  • Speech Therapy Room for rehabilitation of speech and voice disorders
  • Temporal Bone Dissection Laboratory for surgical training
  • Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Laboratory for teaching and skill development

Laryngology Clinic:

The Laryngology Clinic provides specialized evaluation and management of disorders related to the voice, larynx, and upper airway. The clinic focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions that affect voice quality, speech, and swallowing, helping patients restore normal vocal function and airway health.

Common conditions managed in the clinic include hoarseness of voice, vocal cord nodules and polyps, laryngitis, voice fatigue, laryngeal tumors, swallowing disorders, and airway stenosis. Evaluation may include laryngoscopic examination, voice analysis, and other diagnostic procedures to assess the structure and function of the vocal cords.

The clinic also offers guidance on voice care, speech therapy, and rehabilitation, working closely with speech therapists and other specialists to provide comprehensive care for patients with voice and swallowing disorders.

These clinics provide specialized diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up for complex ENT conditions.

Diagnostic & Therapeutic Procedures

The department performs a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including:

  • Diagnostic nasal endoscopy

  •  Audiological investigations including OAE, BERA, impedance audiometry, and pure tone audiometry

Speech and voice assessments are also conducted as part of comprehensive ENT care.

  • Coblation system
  • Microdebrider for sinus surgery
  • HD digital camera with recording system
  •  Nerve stimulator and monitoring systems
  • Audiological equipment including OAE, BERA, impedance audiometer, and pure tone audiometer

Additional facilities include COâ‚‚ laser systems, harmonic scalpel, stroboscopy/high-speed camera systems, suction units, and narrow band imaging systems for advanced ENT diagnostics and surgery.

Teaching and Academic Activities

The Department of Otorhinolaryngology actively contributes to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, providing structured academic teaching along with extensive clinical exposure.

Students undergo training through clinical postings, bedside teaching, case discussions, seminars, and demonstrations of ENT procedures, helping them develop strong clinical skills and diagnostic ability. The department also provides hands-on training through temporal bone dissection and endoscopic sinus surgery training laboratories, enabling practical learning of surgical techniques.

Regular academic seminars, journal clubs, clinical case discussions, continuing medical education (CME) programs, and conferences are conducted to keep faculty members and trainees updated with the latest advances in ENT practice. These academic activities promote clinical excellence, research interest, and continuous professional development among students and residents.
