SMIMS Green Initiatives & Sustainability

Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) is deeply committed to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management. The campus has adopted multiple green initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact while promoting a healthy and sustainable ecosystem.

The institution operates a 125 kW rooftop solar photovoltaic system, generating renewable energy and significantly reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.

The campus also maintains a large green cover with approximately 2.5 lakh mature trees, contributing to carbon sequestration, temperature regulation, biodiversity conservation, and improved air quality.

Water sustainability is ensured through rainwater harvesting systems capable of conserving nearly one million litres annually, along with sewage treatment plants (STPs) that recycle treated water for landscaping and utility purposes.

Energy conservation measures include the use of LED lighting systems, energy-efficient BLDC fans, and optimized pumping systems, resulting in measurable reductions in electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Through systematic environmental audits, waste management programs, and sustainable resource utilization practices, SMIMS continuously works towards maintaining a clean, eco-friendly, and socially responsible healthcare and educational campus.

A Benchmark in Campus Fire Safety – SMIMS Hi-Tech Fire Tender

Sree Mookambika Institutions have established a new benchmark in campus safety by operating a dedicated Hi-Tech Fire Tender, making it one of the few healthcare institutions in South India with such an advanced in-house emergency response system.

The fire tender is equipped with advanced firefighting capabilities including Class A, B, and C fire suppression systems and COâ‚‚-based extinguishing mechanisms. It ensures rapid response not only within the institutional campus but also supports nearby residential and industrial areas during emergencies.

With its independent operational capability, integrated medical support readiness, and specialized equipment, the system is uniquely suited for healthcare environments where electrical, chemical, and high-risk fire hazards may occur.

This initiative reflects SMIMS’ proactive approach to risk management, disaster preparedness, patient safety, and community responsibility, reinforcing its role as a healthcare institution committed to both healing and protecting the community.
