Cardiac Anaesthesia

“Advanced cardiac anaesthesia and CTICU care ensuring safe heart surgery outcomes for both adult and paediatric patients.”

Dr. Prasandan T. MBBS , MD

Cardiac anaesthesia

The Department of Cardiac Anaesthesia at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) provides specialised anaesthesia care for patients undergoing cardiac and major vascular surgeries. Our cardiac anaesthesia team works closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, and critical care specialists to ensure safe perioperative management and optimal patient outcomes.Cardiac anaesthesia requires specialised expertise in managing patients with complex cardiovascular conditions. Our team is skilled in advanced haemodynamic monitoring, perioperative cardiac management, and critical care support, ensuring precise care before, during, and after cardiac procedures.Dr.Prasandan T is a senior Cardiac Anaesthesiologist with extensive experience in perioperative cardiac care and cardiothoracic critical care. He has played a significant role in the development of cardiac surgical services at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS). Dr. Prasandan was instrumental in initiating the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CTVS) program at SMIMS in 2011, helping establish structured cardiac anaesthesia services and dedicated CTICU care at the institution. He has also gained valuable international clinical exposure in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where he worked in high-volume cardiac centres and was involved in the anaesthetic management of complex cardiac surgical procedures. His areas of expertise include cardiac anaesthesia for open heart surgeries, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and valve surgeries, paediatric cardiac anaesthesia for congenital heart disease, advanced haemodynamic monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) support, and post-operative CTICU management. Dr. Prasandan is committed to delivering safe, precise, and evidence-based cardiac anaesthesia, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients undergoing complex cardiac procedures.

Multidisciplinary perioperative planning with cardiology and cardiac surgery teams
Post-operative pain management and enhanced recovery protocols

CTICU & Post-Operative Cardiac Care

The Cardio-Thoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) at SMIMS provides specialised care for patients recovering from cardiac and thoracic surgeries. The unit is managed by a dedicated team of cardiac anaesthesiologists, intensivists, trained nurses, and respiratory therapists, ensuring continuous monitoring and advanced life support during the critical recovery period.

The CTICU is equipped to manage both adult and paediatric cardiac patients, with coordinated multidisciplinary care focused on patient safety, infection prevention, and optimal recovery.

Key Features:

• Dedicated Cardio-Thoracic Intensive Care Unit for post-cardiac surgery patients
• Continuous invasive haemodynamic monitoring including arterial and central venous pressure
Advanced ventilator support systems for adult and paediatric patients
Cardiac rhythm monitoring, defibrillation, and temporary pacing support
Precision infusion systems for inotropes and critical medications
Bedside ultrasound and point-of-care diagnostics for rapid decision making
Post-operative pain management and early recovery protocols
• Coordinated care with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, anaesthesiologists, and nursing teams
