Central Sterile Supply Department

Overview

The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) is a modern, well-equipped facility that plays a vital role in maintaining patient safety and infection control across the hospital. The CSSD functions as the central hub for sterilization, processing, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment used in both surgical and non-surgical procedures. The department operates with strict adherence to NABH standards and infection control protocols, ensuring that all instruments and materials supplied to clinical areas are properly cleaned, sterilized, and safe for patient use. During NABH assessment, the CSSD facility at SMIMS was specifically appreciated for its excellent infrastructure and adherence to quality standards.

Zonal Workflow System

The CSSD follows a unidirectional workflow system to prevent cross-contamination and ensure efficient sterilization processes. The department is divided into three functional zones:

Green Zone – Decontamination Area:

This area is dedicated to the collection, cleaning, and initial processing of used instruments.

Facilities include:

  • Automated washer–disinfectors
  • Ultrasonic cleaning systems for delicate surgical instruments
  •  Dedicated washing and decontamination stations

Yellow Zone – Preparation and Sterilization Area

In this zone, instruments and materials are inspected, assembled, packed, and sterilized.

Sterilization methods include:

  • Autoclaves for steam sterilization
  • Ethylene Oxide (ETO) sterilization for heat-sensitive materials
  • Plasma sterilization systems for rapid sterilization of laparoscopes, endoscopes, and delicate surgical instruments

These advanced systems ensure effective sterilization of both routine and specialized medical equipment.

Red Zone – Sterile Storage and Distribution Area

The sterile zone is used for storage and issue of sterilized instruments and supplies to various departments in the hospital. Proper storage conditions and controlled access ensure maintenance of sterility until the instruments are used.

Quality Assurance and Safety

The CSSD maintains strict quality control measures including:

  • Biological indicators and chemical indicators included with each sterilization cycle
  • Batch monitoring and documentation for all sterilized materials
  • Recall and traceability systems for every sterilized instrument set in case of infection surveillance
  • Regular equipment validation and sterilization monitoring

These measures ensure complete traceability and compliance with infection control standards.

Skilled Workforce and Supervision

The CSSD functions 24×7 with a team of well-trained nursing staff and technicians who manage instrument processing and sterilization services for the entire hospital.

The department functions under the guidance and supervision of the Department of Microbiology, ensuring strict adherence to sterilization protocols, infection control practices, and NABH quality standards.
