DIALYSIS UNIT

The Nephrology and Haemodialysis Unit at SMIMS is recognised as one of the leading dialysis centres in South Tamil Nadu and has been cited as a model unit under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. The department is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred renal care supported by advanced infrastructure, skilled professionals, and compassionate service.

The unit is staffed by a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising experienced nephrologists, medical doctors, trained dialysis technicians, dialysis nurses, and qualified ancillary staff. Together, they provide safe, efficient, and continuous renal replacement therapy for patients with acute and chronic kidney diseases.

Advanced Dialysis Infrastructure & Services

The hemodialysis unit is equipped with 23 state-of-the-art dialysis machines, including separate machines for serology-positive and serology-negative patients, ensuring strict infection control. The facility is supported by two RO plants and a portable RO system, maintaining high water quality standards. Operating in four shifts, the unit performs approximately 1,800–2,000 dialysis sessions per month, catering to both outpatients and inpatients.

Dialysis services are available for all age groups, with special focus on pediatric and geriatric patients, and function on a 24×7 basis. In emergency situations, round-the-clock dialysis support is provided across all intensive care units and the Emergency Medicine Department. Advanced procedures such as heparin-free hemodialysis, slow low-efficiency dialysis (SLED), charcoal hemoperfusion, and plasmapheresis are routinely performed. Dialyser reuse is carried out using automated reprocessing machines, strictly following fibre bundle volume standards and safety protocols.

Renal Transplantation Programmer

In 2017, the department initiated live-related donor renal transplantation, marking a significant milestone in advanced renal care at SMIMS. Today, kidney transplantation is performed routinely with outcomes comparable to established centres, while being offered at a relatively affordable cost, minimizing financial burden for economically weaker patients.

The Nephrology & Dialysis Unit at SMIMS stands as a centre of excellence, delivering comprehensive renal care through advanced technology, clinical expertise, and a strong commitment to accessible, life-saving treatment.
