DIALYSIS UNIT

Overview

The Dialysis Unit at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) provides comprehensive renal replacement therapy for patients with acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. The unit is recognized as one of the major dialysis centres in the region and operates round the clock to provide safe and reliable dialysis services. Supported by experienced nephrologists, trained dialysis technicians, specialized nursing staff, and advanced infrastructure, the dialysis unit ensures high standards of patient safety, infection control, and quality care. The centre also functions under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (TNCMCHIS), enabling affordable dialysis services for a large number of patients.

Dialysis Services

The dialysis unit provides a wide range of renal replacement therapies including:

  • Conventional Haemodialysis
  • Heparin-free haemodialysis for patients with bleeding risk
  • Slow Low Efficiency Dialysis (SLED) for critically ill patients
  • Emergency dialysis services for acute kidney injury and toxin removal
  • Dialysis support for ICU patients and emergency cases

Dialysis services are available 24 hours a day, ensuring uninterrupted care for both outpatients and inpatients.

Infrastructure and Facilities

The dialysis unit is equipped with modern infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient dialysis treatment.

Key facilities include:

  • 25 modern haemodialysis machines
  •  Separate dialysis areas for serology-positive and serology-negative patients
  • Two Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants and a portable RO system ensuring high-quality dialysis water
  •  Dialysis unit functioning in four shifts daily
  •  Capacity to perform approximately 1,800–2,500 dialysis sessions per month

The facility maintains strict infection control standards and continuous monitoring to ensure patient safety.

Infection Control and Safety

The dialysis unit follows strict infection prevention protocols including:

  • Separate dialysis machines for Hepatitis B and other serology-positive patients
  •  Regular monitoring of dialysis water quality
  •  Use of standardized sterilization and disinfection protocols
  •  Continuous monitoring of dialysis parameters

These measures ensure safe dialysis treatment and prevention of cross-infection.

Multidisciplinary Care

The dialysis unit works in close coordination with:

  • Nephrology Department
  • Critical Care Units
  • Emergency Medicine Department
  • Urology and Transplant Teams

This integrated approach ensures comprehensive management of patients with complex kidney diseases.
