Introduction to Pathology

Pathology is a core branch of medical science that focuses on the study of diseases, including their causes, development, and effects on the human body. The Department of Pathology plays a crucial role in diagnostic services, supporting clinicians in identifying diseases and planning appropriate treatment. It provides comprehensive laboratory services to the hospital and surrounding healthcare centers, contributing significantly to patient care and medical practice.

Scope and Services of the Department

The department offers a wide range of diagnostic services through various specialized divisions such as histopathology, cytology, haematology, and clinical pathology. Histopathology deals with the examination of tissues, while cytology focuses on the study of individual cells, including techniques like fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). The haematology and clinical pathology sections provide continuous analysis of blood and body fluids, ensuring timely and accurate reporting. In addition, the department manages blood banking services, ensuring the availability of safe blood and its components for patient care.

Objectives and Vision

The primary objective of the department is to achieve excellence in diagnostics, education, and research in pathology. It emphasizes values such as social responsibility, collaboration, and continuous improvement in knowledge and skills. The department aims to train students to understand disease processes, correlate laboratory findings with clinical conditions, and contribute effectively to patient management and healthcare delivery.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The department is equipped with modern infrastructure to support both academic and diagnostic activities. Facilities include well-designed lecture halls and demonstration rooms with audiovisual aids. The undergraduate laboratories are well furnished with microscopes and learning materials, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in examining tissues and body fluids.

Advanced laboratories are available for histopathology, equipped with automated tissue processors, embedding systems, microtomes, and staining units, including immunohistochemistry setups. The department also includes a grossing room with specialized equipment for specimen handling, a research laboratory with advanced instruments, and a well-stocked library with books and journals. A pathology museum displaying numerous preserved specimens and charts further enhances visual learning.

Academic Programme and Teaching Methods

The department provides structured teaching for undergraduate students through lectures, practical sessions, and integrated learning approaches. Teaching includes clinicopathological correlation, helping students connect laboratory findings with disease diagnosis and treatment.

Additional academic activities such as seminars, group discussions, viva sessions, and extra classes for slow learners are conducted to improve understanding. Regular internal assessments and university examinations evaluate students’ knowledge and practical skills, ensuring comprehensive learning.

Research and Academic Development

Research is an integral part of the department, with facilities available for conducting studies in various areas of pathology such as histopathology, cytology, and haematology. Students and faculty are encouraged to participate in research activities, contributing to advancements in medical science and improving diagnostic techniques.

Conclusion

Pathology is a vital subject that forms the foundation for understanding diseases and their diagnosis. By integrating theoretical knowledge with laboratory skills, it enables students to interpret clinical conditions accurately and contribute to effective patient care. The department thus plays a key role in medical education, diagnostics, and research, making it essential for the development of competent healthcare professionals.
