INFRASTRUCTURE

 

The Department of Ophthalmology provides comprehensive, world-class eye care supported by a team of skilled and experienced ophthalmologists, encompassing all major ophthalmic sub-specialties under one roof. The department serves over 100 outpatients daily and performs more than 1,000 eye surgeries annually, ensuring high-quality and affordable care through advanced technology, clinical expertise, and a patient-centered approach. Committed to community service, it offers free treatment, food, and accommodation for economically disadvantaged patients and conducts regular outreach eye camps under the District Blindness Control Society program, providing free screening, investigations, and surgeries to prevent avoidable blindness. The department offers specialty services including glaucoma care, retina and vitreoretinal services, cornea and refractive care, pediatric ophthalmology and squint management, uvea and medical retina services, orbit and oculoplastic surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, low-vision rehabilitation, contact lens services, and eye banking. Surgical and laser procedures include cataract, cornea, retina, and glaucoma surgeries, lid, lacrimal, orbital, and ocular surface disorder surgeries, minor ophthalmic procedures, and advanced laser treatments. Academically, the department has contributed more than 50 research publications in reputed national and international journals and presented over 30 scientific papers at major conferences.

 

The Department of Ophthalmology is equipped with modern infrastructure and well-planned facilities to support high-quality patient care, clinical training, and academic development. The department includes fully functional outpatient departments, wards, operation theatres, offices, seminar rooms, and library facilities, all designed to meet clinical and educational requirements.

The Outpatient Department (OPD) consists of 11 rooms covering 433 m², with a 250 m² waiting area. Examination rooms, a dark room, refraction room, demonstration room, dressing room, minor OT, equipment room, and store room are all adequately arranged to ensure smooth patient flow and effective clinical training. The department has two wards with adequate ventilation and spacing of 1.5 meters between cots, including fully equipped dressing and procedure rooms.

Operation theatre facilities include one table per day per unit, totaling six tables per week, ensuring sufficient surgical capacity. The department office is fully functional, staffed with clerical support, equipped with computers and office equipment, and provides dedicated office space for faculty and residents, including rest rooms for senior and postgraduate residents.

The seminar room is adequately sized and equipped with internet access, audio-visual equipment, LCD projector, microphone, and speaker systems to support interactive teaching and academic presentations.

Library facilities include both departmental and central resources, with a total of 22,729 central library books, including 1,016 on ophthalmology, and 186 departmental books. In the past three years, 3,481 books have been added, including 141 in ophthalmology. The library subscribes to 202 Indian journals (6 in ophthalmology, 48 online) and 153 foreign journals (7 in ophthalmology, 48 online), with internet access available for academic use. Central library and reading room timings are 8 AM to 8 PM.

Overall, the department’s infrastructure ensures comprehensive support for patient care, surgical services, teaching, and research activities.

1. SPECIALITY SERVICES

The Department of Ophthalmology runs a range of specialty clinics throughout the week, providing comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for patients with diverse eye conditions. Experienced specialists lead these clinics in subspecialty areas. The Glaucoma Clinic operates on Monday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and the Retina & Vitreoretinal Surgery Clinic on Friday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Refraction Clinic and Eye Bank function daily from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Squint, Paediatric Ophthalmology, and Orbit & Oculoplasty Clinics are held on Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The Uvea & Medical Retina Clinic is on Thursday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic on Tuesday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Cornea & Ocular Surface Clinic operates on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the Contact Lens Clinic from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. The Low Vision Aids Clinic is available daily from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

 

The Department of Ophthalmology offers a comprehensive range of surgical and laser procedures across all subspecialties. Lid and lacrimal surgeries include tarsoraphy, lid repair, ectropion and entropion correction, ptosis correction, dacryocystectomy (DCT), dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), probing, and tumor excision with lid reconstruction. Strabismus surgeries provide corrective treatment for squint, while orbital procedures include cyclocryotherapy and cyclophotocoagulation. Ocular surface surgeries involve pterygium excision with grafting. Cataract procedures include extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), small incision cataract surgery (SICS), phacoemulsification, and secondary intraocular lens implantation. Retina procedures include intravitreal injections, anterior vitrectomy, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), and scleral buckling. Glaucoma surgeries include trabeculectomy and glaucoma valve implant surgery. Cornea surgeries include keratoplasty, corneal or corneoscleral tear repair, and corneal collagen cross-linking (C3R). Minor surgical procedures include foreign body removal, chalazion incision and curettage, epilation, syringing, subconjunctival injection, suture removal, conjunctival tear suturing, and posterior sub-Tenon’s injections (PST). Laser procedures include YAG peripheral iridotomy, YAG capsulotomy, focal and panretinal photocoagulation, and keratorefractive procedures, providing comprehensive surgical care for a wide range of ophthalmic conditions.

The Department of Ophthalmology regularly conducts continuing medical education programs and academic activities to enhance knowledge and skills in various subspecialties. Recent programs include World Eye Sight Day CME on 12 October 2023, SMART UG 2023 Re-Vision Program on 5–6 December 2023, CME on Diabetic Retinopathy on 10 October 2022, CME on Keratoconus on 15 April 2022, CME on Age-Related Macular Degeneration on 13 October 2021, CME on Glaucoma on 25 March 2021, CME on Retinopathy of Prematurity on 25 November 2020, and CME on Intraocular Lens on 16 March 2020.

 

The Department of Ophthalmology has made significant research and academic contributions, with more than 50 publications in reputed national and international journals, including Oxford and IMJ. Faculty and students have also presented over 30 e-papers and e-posters at state and national-level conferences.
