The Department of General Surgery at Sree Mookambika Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) provides comprehensive surgical care covering a wide range of conditions including gastrointestinal diseases, cancer surgery, breast surgery, thyroid and endocrine disorders, vascular diseases, trauma, and emergency surgical conditions.The department performs major abdominal surgeries, advanced head and neck cancer surgeries, reconstructive procedures, and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries. With a strong focus on patient safety and modern surgical techniques, the department provides both elective and emergency surgical services.Equipped with state-of-the-art operation theatre complexes and modern surgical technology, the department ensures high standards of surgical care and perioperative management. Patients benefit from integrated services including critical care support, advanced diagnostics, and multidisciplinary collaboration with other specialties. Facilities & Infrastructure

Outpatient Department (OPD)

The surgical OPD consists of multiple consultation rooms along with dedicated dressing rooms and a fully equipped Minor Operation Theatre (MOT) where a variety of minor surgical procedures are performed under strict aseptic conditions.

Major Operation Theatre Complex

The department functions from a modern OT complex equipped with advanced surgical instruments and modern anesthesia facilities, enabling safe performance of major surgical procedures including laparoscopic and oncological surgeries.

Surgical Wards

Separate male and female surgical wards provide comfortable inpatient care with continuous monitoring and nursing support. Demonstration rooms are available within the wards to facilitate bedside teaching and clinical discussions for students.

Endoscopy Services

The department is equipped with dedicated upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy units for both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

A wide range of routine and advanced surgical procedures are performed in the department.

Oncological & Major Surgeries:

• Modified radical mastectomy
• Thyroid surgeries (hemi-thyroidectomy and total thyroidectomy)
• Lymph node biopsies
• Surgeries for stomach malignancies
• Surgeries for liver abscess and hydatid cyst
• Pancreatic surgeries including pancreaticoduodenectomy

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)

The department manages a 10-bed Surgical ICU designed according to modern critical care and NABH standards. The ICU is equipped with:

Burns ICU

A 6-bed Burns ICU provides specialized care for patients with burn injuries and other complex surgical conditions.

All critical care units are integrated with the Hospital Information System (HIS) and PACS, enabling rapid access to laboratory results, radiology reports, and patient records.
