PERIODONTOLOGY

Overview

Periodontology is the dental specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the various diseases and conditions affecting the supporting structures of the teeth. Achieving and maintaining optimal periodontal health is a fundamental determining factor in the long-term success of any dental treatment plan. Hence our goal is to restore the lost periodontal structures and to correct the various aesthetic problems caused due to periodontal diseases.

The Department of Periodontology is committed to delivering comprehensive and structured training programs tailored to the distinct learning needs of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. The curriculum emphasizes foundational knowledge, clinical orientation, and the development of essential diagnostic and preventive skills, ensuring they gain confidence in identifying and managing common periodontal conditions. Teaching methodologies include interactive lectures, preclinical exercises, clinical demonstrations, and supervised patient care to build core competencies. By fine-tuning the training to match the competency levels of learners at different stages, the department ensures progressive skill enhancement, professional growth, and the cultivation of competent and ethical periodontal practitioners.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME:

Undergraduates receive training on the diagnosis of various periodontal diseases and conditions, with particular emphasis on the formulation of a comprehensive treatment plan for the patient. Students are engaged in clinical case discussions and seminars during clinical posting to gain a deeper insight on the subject. Clinical training aspects provide students with a wide and diversified range of clinical experience. Theory classes are conducted to enhance the knowledge of students with both basic as well as current scenarios in Periodontics. To elevate their competence as clinicians, undergraduates receive training on advanced treatment modalities like Laser dentistry during the period of Internship. They actively participate in the undergraduate research activities conducted by the department and are encouraged to present their research work as scientific presentations in conferences and conventions. Our students have an impressive record of publishing numerous research articles in indexed journals.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME:

Department of Periodontology offers a three-year MDS program designed to equip dental graduates with advanced knowledge and skills through a blend of intensive academic training, hands-on clinical experience and research-focused learning. Postgraduate training is designed with primary focus on treatment modalities ranging from conventional to advanced therapies while keeping pace with the dynamics of the field. A wealth of academic expertise provides thorough practical education in advanced clinical periodontology including aesthetics, dental implants and contemporary surgical methods. Journal clubs, seminar discussions and case presentations are conducted to assist in adapting an evidence-based clinical practice rooting in sound scientific knowledge. Postgraduates are encouraged to participate and present scientific papers in various national and international level conferences, PG conventions and CDE programmes. Postgraduates receive supervised expert guidance for conducting high quality research in collaboration with research institutes like Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) on latest advances in the field of Periodontics and publication of their research work on highly accredited journals.

  • Department of Periodontology has received the institutional Research Excellence Award 2026 in recognition of its efforts towards comprehensive research in the latest advancements in the field.
  • Both Faculties and Postgraduates have made significant contribution through publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed, national and international dental journals.
